Core Concepts

Assurgent Leader is based on some core foundational concepts:

  1. Leaders are Readers.
  2. Leaders are meant to serve those that they lead (Servant Leader concept)
  3. Leadership is NOT the same as management, but they overlap.
  4. We believe in the Level 5 Leader theory promoted by Jim Collins.
  5. Leadership is a way of life, not a quick fix or a short study.
  6. Leaders continuously grow.
  7. Leaders should learn and get input from many sources. Our favorites are listed below.
  8. Stoicism is an important concept for leadership lifestyle.

Recommended Books

We read a lot. And talk about reading a lot. The most common questions are about what the best books are. That’s hard to answer because we believe that a book also has to hit a person at the right time for it to really have an impact. At the end of the day, the best book is one that’ll be read. With that said, here are our favorites:

  1. Anything by Patrick Lencioni — the first half of his books are fiction fables using his concepts, so they’re very accessible and quick reads
  2. All books by Ryan Holiday — these are largely on stoicism and leadership
  3. Good to Great — excellent book about what makes companies great. Spoiler alert – it’s the leader. A Level 5 Leader.
  4. The Captain Class — great book for just getting into leadership. It’s “Good to Great” but for sports teams. Spoiler alert — again, it’s the leader. The captains, in this case.
  5. Who Moved My Cheese
  6. What Got you Here won’t get you There & Other Marshall Goldsmith Books
  7. The Culture Code
  8. Radical Candor
  9. Grit
